Activity is not the whole picture
A busy service tells you that customers are coming through the door. It does not tell you what is left after the costs of delivering that service. Understanding performance means looking at sales alongside labour, purchasing, waste and the way the operation uses time.
Look for patterns, not a single bad day
Compare similar services and periods. Ask where extra preparation, repeated work or unnecessary waste occurs. The useful question is not simply whether a cost is high, but what operational activity is creating it.
Turn a number into a decision
Choose one issue that the operation can influence. Define the change, who will carry it out and what you will review afterwards. A simple, consistent review is more useful than a report that nobody uses.
